Fiber optic patch cord is a fiber optic cable with connectors at either end, with a core encased by a coating that is surrounded by a relatively thick protective jacket. Fiber optic patch cord is usually used for connections between optical transceiver and terminal box.
Two types of optical fibers:
(1) Single-mode fiber: it is generally yellow with blue connector and protective jacket, supporting a longer transmission distance.
(2) Multi-mode fiber: it is generally orange or grey, with black or cream, supporting a relatively shorter distance.
Notes for using fiber optic patch cords:
(1) The wavelength received by optical module at either end of fiber optic patch cord should be consistent, namely optical modules at both ends should have the same wavelength. The two modules can be distinguished by their colors. Generally, optic modules with short wavelength are multi-mode fibers which are orange or grey, while those with long wavelength are single-mode fibers which are yellow. The same wavelength can ensure the accuracy of data transmission.
(2) When in use, fiber optic patch cords should not be excessively bended or circled to decrease optical attenuation.
(3) After use, connectors of fiber optic patch cords should be protected by protective cover to prevent damage to fiber optics from dust and oil pollution.
Denotation of FC\ST\SC\LC\MTRJ\PC\APC\UPC for fiber optic patch cords:
FC\ST\SC\LC\MTRJ\PC\APC\UPC
connectors differ in physical interfaces:
(1) FC stands for Ferrule Connector or Fiber Channel and is a circular connector with a treaded body.
(2) ST stands for Straight Tip and is a 45 degree angled bayonet-style connector.
(3) SC stands for Subscriber Connector, Square Connector or Standard Connector and is a square-shaped connector.
(4) LC stands for Lucent Connector, Little Connector or Local Connector and MTRJ stands for Mechanical Transfer Registered Jack or Media Termination - Recommended Jack. LC and MTRJ are both connectors with small plugs.
(5) PC stands for Physical Contact, APC stands for Angled Physical Contact and UPC stands for Ultra Polished Connector. In structure, PC is spherical, APC is 8-degree oblique angled and UPC is ultra polished.
