The Structure and Classification of Ball Valves

A ball valve is a valve with a ball as the opening and closing part. It is widely used in petroleum refining, long-distance pipelines, chemical industry, pharmacy and other industries. Today we will introduce the classification and structure of ball valves.

Classification

1. Classification by Structure
The ball valve is divided into the floating ball valve and the fixed ball valve according to structure.

2. Classified by Sphere Installation
According to the ball installation method, the ball valve is divided into the top-mounted, side-mounted and oblique-mounted one. Side-mounted ball valves are divided into integral and split ball valves, and the latter fall into two categories: two-piece and three-piece valves.

3. Classification by Sphere Structure
According to the sphere structure, the ball valve is divided into the integral one and hemisphere one. There are five types of integral ball valves, including straight-through ball valves, right-angle ball valves, L-shaped three-way ball valves, T-shaped three-way ball valves and Y-shaped three-way ball valves.

4. Classified by Applications
Ball valves are divided into nine types according to applications, containing vacuum ball valves, low temperature and ultra low temperature ball valves, high temperature ball valves, wear-resistant ball valves, send-receive ball valves, multi-function ball valves, all-plastic ball valves, wear-resistant lined ball valves and heat preservation ball valves.

Structure

1. Structure of Floating Ball valves
The main feature of the floating ball valve is that the ball has no support shaft. The ball is supported by valve seats at the inlet and outlet ends of the valve. The valve rod and the ball are movably connected. The ball of this ball valve is held in a floating state between two valve seats. The ball can be freely rotated between the two valve seats with the valve stem by a handle or other driving devices.

When the ball's hole is aligned with the valve passage hole, the ball valve is open, the fluid is unobstructed, and the fluid resistance of the valve is the minimal. When the ball is turned 90 degrees, the ball's hole is perpendicular to the valve passage hole and the ball valve is closed. And the ball is pushed to the valve seat at the downstream of the valve under the effect of fluid pressure, causing the seating mechanism to compress.

2. Structure of Fixed Ball valves
The ball of the fixed ball valve is integrated with the upper and lower valve stem or made into an integral coupling ball, that is, the ball and the upper and lower valve stem are forged into one body and then mounted on the bearing. The ball can rotate freely along the axis perpendicular to the valve passage, but cannot move along the passage axis.

Therefore, when the fixed ball valve is working, all the force generated by the upstream fluid pressure of the valve on the ball is transmitted to the bearing, which will not cause the ball to move to the valve seat at the downstream of the valve, so the seat will not withstand excessive pressure. And the fixed ball valve is with low torque, small deformation of the valve seat , stable sealing performance and long service life, suitable for high pressure and large diameter applications.
