In 2009, the Inner Mongolia 10,000 tons vertical extruder broke the foreign monopoly by extruding the first thick-walled seamless steel pipe. In 2015, Qinghai 10,000 tons extrusion and die forging double function heavy press extruded the world's first longest seamless steel pipe to achieve the international leading position. In just a few years, technological innovation broke through. China's long-cherished wishes to replace imports with high-end heat-resistant seamless steel pipes and enter the international market are becoming a reality.

Cooperated with Tsinghua University for five years to overcome difficulties, the world's first heavy-duty press can complete the production of more than 95% of aviation die forging parts. The first carbon steel seamless steel pipe is meters in length, 630 mm in diameter and 110 mm in wall thickness. 10,000 tons of multifunctional press is unique in the world, which has die forging and extrusion of two functions of maximum tonnage press. It can produce nuclear power and high parameter ultra-supercritical thermal power unit, difficult deformation, large diameter thick-walled alloy new material pipes. It also can be forged into forgings with large and super large titanium alloy, high temperature alloy, ultra high strength metal in aviation, aerospace industry and other fields.
 
Why do we need independently develop large tonnage heavy press to produce thick wall seamless steel pipe? What does the world's longest mean? Wu Rendong, a professor at the Heavy Equipment Research Institute of Tsinghua University's Department of Mechanical Engineering, is in charge of the project. He gave us an answer.
 
Large-caliber thick-walled seamless steel pipe is an essential equipment for supercritical and ultra-supercritical thermal power generation projects with a capacity of more than 600,000 KW. Its manufacturing relies on heavy press. However, the manufacturing technology of heavy press has been monopolized by foreign countries for a long time, and China can only import it at a high price once. Only by breaking such an awkward situation can we truly occupy a place in the international field.
 
Moreover, manufacturing 10,000 tons of heavy equipment marks a country's manufacturing capacity, involving the design, manufacturing, transportation, installation and many other technical problems. It belongs to the "extreme manufacturing" field. Although it is extremely difficult to succeed, no one wants to seize the initiative. Because China has accumulated profound technological experience, breaking foreign monopoly is only a stage achievement. Only by forming absolute advantages ahead of the international level and mastering the market pricing power can China remain invincible in the competition.
 
"More importantly, the longer and thicker seamless steel pipe is the direction of future product development in the application field." Wu rendong said that with the increasing power of the power station and the increasing depth of offshore drilling, the diameter of the thick-walled steel pipe is more and more large, and the difficulty of welding of high-alloy steel pipe also puts forward higher requirements for the length of the thick-walled steel pipe.
