Preventive maintenance for injection molds is a necessary matter
On this page
Investing in an injection mold to support mass production is usually the largest acquisition of making a beeline for an injection molding project. In addition to the molding press, the injection mold itself is usually the highest upfront cost. However, if one press needs maintenance, the mold can be transferred to another press to continue production. If the mould breaks, production will stop. Just as capital equipment needs to be maintained, the injection mold itself requires regular maintenance procedures to ensure that the mold is in the best condition.

A reasonable constructed and high quality mold is the key to ensure high quality parts. Persevering in a regular preventive mold maintenance program is a necessary condition for the consistent production of high quality parts in line with customer requirements.

Preventive maintenance for mould is critical to production

Carrying out preventive mold maintenance is critical to supporting mass production before the mold needs to be repaired. Determining the correct injection mold maintenance program is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Each mold is unique to the parts it produces, and it can be simple or complex, single or multi-cavity, cold or hot runner, and any number of other different factors that present in the injection mold.

After a certain amount of cycles, it is important to evaluate the status of the tool in order to develop a preventive mold maintenance plan. Some tools can run 50,000 cycles before maintenance they need, while other tools require to be disassembled and thoroughly cleaned after 25,000 cycles. The plastic resin used in the molding process will have an effect on the wear and tear of the tool. For example, glass-filled nylon than non-glass-filled materials can cause greater wear on the tool.

Once the maintenance interval is determined, you can determine and adjust the range of Preventive Maintenance (PM) in order to suit the production plan. If the mold is for mass production and the downtime is not much long, the PM can be actually executed there at the press without disassembling the mold. This satisfies the intermediate cleaning, but still requires a complete PM, during which the mold is disassembled and thoroughly cleaned periodically at intervals determined.

Process monitoring systems or enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems can accurately track all cycles, and automatically issue PM work instructions to the mold maintenance department to achieve PM automatic scheduling. This is ideal for mass production operations because you cannot withstand getting the tools dirty and producing nonconforming parts that need to be repaired rather than to be preventively maintained.

As the saying goes, prevention is the first, treatment the second. The injection mold maintenance is absolutely the same. The preventive maintenance program for injection molds will be consistent with your production to continuously create the precision components which the molds were designed for.
