ASTM Carbon B Introduction
ASTM carbon B steel sheet is a kind of weather resistant steel, which is better applied for heavy and load bearing structures. Carbon B sheet is produced from billet castings from blast furnace and hot rolled in a continuous mill for smaller thicknesses and on a four high mill for others. The purity of the steel of fine grade austenitic quality and the addition of special alloys, provide this steel plates, excellent mechanical characteristics, even at high temperatures and self-passivating properties when exposed to corrosive agents present in urban atmosphere. This property allows Carbon B steel to face down corrosion for longer periods when compared to common steel, even if not painted.
Hot Forming: Hot working may be done if necessary. Consult the steel supplier for information.
Flame Cutting: Normally it is carried out with the usual methods. In general, no preheat is required, but working on plates with a temperature of less than 10 °C shall be avoided.
Forming: This steel contains more alloying elements than plain carbon steel and thus is somewhat more difficult to form.
Drawing: In spite of its excellent mechanical properties, Carbon B can be moderately drawn.
Welding: Carbon B plates can be easily welded using common procedures used for mild steel plates (spot, TIG, MIG, MAG, electrode etc.). It is however advisable to avoid tempering in the heated zone and therefore to limit the ratio of linear energy to the thickness. Considering the chemical composition, it can be stated that Carbon B steel is not suit to cold cracking. Welded structures fabricated with Carbon B steel does not normally need thermal stress relief treatment.
